We are becoming more and more aware of the importance of understanding if a structure is healthy or not, because aging, deterioration, seismic events or potential defects in the construction process can lead to serious consequences to our safety.

Structural Health Monitoring is becoming a point of interest for many institutions and professionals.

Asclepius was thought up with the aim of observing changes in the monitored structure and to give us not only the engineering parameters, but also a green or red light, an intuitive picture of the health of the structure.

Far too often we have excess information that we can’t decode or which we don’t have time to manage; in most cases we just want to get a simple answer: yes or no.

Asclepius can make the analysis intelligible even to people who do not work in the sector.

The highest performance is achieved by working in real-time in combination with either Atlas or Triton systems, but the software can also be used to analyze offline data.

Asclepius is the result of more than 30 years of engineering experience in the sector.

Asclepius relies on data from a sensor network for the operation of its algorithms.

The starting point is a building where Atlas (or Triton) are installed along with LTFB-160 or LTME-90 accelerometers as suggested by our structural engineers.

The system is connected via WiFi or LAN network, it is strongly recommended that the communication network has a battery back up in order to handle power outages.
Asclepius runs on a windows PC, the PC can be installed in the local network or even remotely without distance restrictions.

Asclepius works with two algorithms:

Change in the natural frequency of the structure
This method requires long term environmental noise analysis in the setup/installation phase. This survey is necessary to identify the natural frequency of the structure. Subsequent data analysis, during the monitoring phase aims to discern potential changes in the natural frequency of the structure.

Inter-floor drift
This technique requires in-depth knowledge of structure design and structural engineering.
The structural engineer must fine-tune the system by entering the maximum safe inter-floor displacements for the structure.
Asclepius monitors the displacements and sends a pseudo-real-time alarm when potential damage to the structure is a risk.

AUTOMATIC POST-EARTHQUAKE ASSESSMENT OF STRUCTURAL HEALTH

If Asclepius is used to assess the health of a structure after an earthquake, the acceleration thresholds on the dataloggers (Atlas or Triton) are set during the tuning phase. When a seismic event exceeds the specified threshold, the dataloggers automatically transfer their data to the Asclepius data folder.
As soon as the folder contains all the data related to an event the Asclepius starts analyzing the data.

CONTINUOUS MONITORING OF STRUCTURE HEALTH

In this case, dataloggers are configured to automatically transfer environmental noise data to the Asclepius folder.
Asclepius continuously analyzes the data and sends an alarm if anomalous changes are detected while monitoring the structure.
